Chapter 7
The very next day, Ava was summoned to Corleoneâs office. She figured that she had been there long enough for him to finally give her something new to do. Shadowing Julien and being told information that even the maids and butlers knew made her feel as if everyone was still viewing her with scrutiny.
They were still doubting her allegiance.
While they had all the reason to do so, especially since she was there to gather as much evidence and information as possible, she wished that they were less wary. It would make her job faster and easier, and then she could finally go home. She could finally see her mother and Ellie and Oscar again.
She knew her way well enough that she didnât need the butler to guide her anymore. So, she knocked once, and then once more when she heard complete silence behind the door.
Assuming that Corleone just wanted her to wait until she was told to come in, Ava stood by the entrance and merely observed the hallway that she had been through so many times before. Usually, she was ushered into the office. But now, she could take her time to truly observe her surroundings.
Ava looked up to take note of the cameras pointing at the hallway. She expected there to be about five to record each angle and leave no blind spot. When she saw none, she was confused. Either the old man was secretive about his identity, or they had access to military-grade hardware that ensured their cameras were hidden and of the highest quality.
She knew that a decision was being made as she waited. When the time came, she would sneak back into Corleoneâs office for the information the detectives in charge of the Veritas case desperately needed. Additionally, that very same information would be the key to her own freedom.
Once it went public, both the officers and the people of the city would know that they had condemned Ava for nothing.
Or at least, thatâs what she hoped.
Corleone was confident that nothing would go awry. Ava hadnât dared or even known how to get in and out of the estate for a few days without anyone telling her. And Julien was clearly just his messenger. Corleone probably relied on the knowledge that people would be all too willing to underestimate an old man.
With that observation, Ava decided that that night, she would take the risk and get the information that she needed.
Suddenly, the door swung open, and out walked Julien with the biggest scowl on his face since the day he had met Ava. She must have been the topic of his conversation with Corleone because the moment he locked eyes with Ava, he gave her the most scathing glare.
If looks could kill.
But Corleone didnât give Ava a chance to react as he called out, âCome in.â
Ava spared Julien one last look, which he didnât return, and walked into the old manâs office. She almost stopped in her tracks when she saw the thunderous expression on the old manâs usually gentle face.
